I met Marcus when he was 24-25. This was at Sun Microsystems. There were about 100 people in our office and he was, by far, the most fun. A leader, funny, smart and ambitious. Great story teller. I remember thinking to myself...this guy is going to be somebody.
I remember when he met Jodi and how he was head over heels about her. That was a love story that evolved in front of me. From meeting Jodi, to getting married and having children. A beautiful life.
After Sun moved our department to Colorado, I moved on to another job and so did Marcus. After 9/11 many lost their jobs in Silicon Valley, including me. Marcus had moved on to a management position in the telecom industry and hired me. I must have worked with him for over 10 years.
He was the best boss. He did everything he could to help us make quota. He would take our team to baseball games, bowling often, dinners, Margaritaville in Santa Cruz, after work drinks at some dive bar. His epic parties at his house in Los Gatos. It was fun working with him. I remember marveling that there was no turnover in his team, rarely did anyone quit. Like, who wouldn't want to be around Marcus.
He is one of the finest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. What a loss.
